Starting 2025 off right, we decided to head off to the beautiful county of Ceredigion, an area of the Welsh countryside neither of us had previously visited, staying in a quaint cottage called 'Ty Mamgu' on the Nantgwynfaen Organic Farm. Despite there being a campsite and other holiday accommodations nearby, our spot in Ty Mamgu at the edge of the farm felt completely secluded.
True to its name, Ty Mamgu (Grandma's House), is like stepping back through time. There was a subtle vintage decor, yet modern world touches in the form of a smart TV, WiFi and a radio. A short walk from the cottage is a communal games barn where guests can enjoy board games, a pool table, and more. Plus, there’s the cutest little farm shop stocked with goodies from the farm, local treats, and a few extra surprises!
Arriving at Ty Mamgu
We did get a bit lost when we arrived given that by the time we arrived it was dark! After a quick turnaround in the farm’s driveway, we spotted the little sign for the cottage and parked up outside. Ty Mamgu is self-check-in, which we absolutely love, especially with reactive dogs. The only thing the hosts, Amanda and Ken, asked was for us to text them our ETA and let them know we’d arrived safely—super easy!
Waiting for us in the cottage was a bottle of fresh milk, direct from the farm, as well as organic eggs, Stroop waffles (yummy) and a roaring fire!
The Space

The space itself is warm and welcoming, with a snug open plan living area that’s perfect for curling up with a book or unwinding after a day of exploring. The kitchen is well-equipped for whipping up a home-cooked meal, and the dining nook is ideal for slow, relaxed breakfasts. The bed is super comfy. The bathroom has everything you need to freshen up after a day outdoors. With a walk in shower, toilet and bidet hosts Amanda and Ken have really thought of everything.
Oil, salt, and pepper aren’t supplied in the kitchen, but you’ll find tea, coffee, and sugar stocked up in the cupboard! The entryway leads into a cozy little porch room, where you can sit and play the piano. It’s also where you’ll find the dog supplies. Bowls, treats, and a towel are all provided for you, and outside there is a designated station for washing your dogs, should they get muddy from exploring.
Accommodating two guests and two dogs, Ty Mamgu has a large and luxurious king-size bed with the softest linen. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture without blankets, nor are they allowed in the bed. This is to keep the cottage as allergen free as possible.
The Outside Area
Ty Mamgu doesn’t have a garden as such, but guests are welcome to exercise their dogs in any empty fields- just be sure to avoid any with livestock. Outside, there are comfy chairs to kick back and relax, plus a firepit to keep warm while you stargaze under the beautifully clear, light-pollution-free sky. Because the garden and surrounding fields aren't enclosed guests are asked to keep dogs on leads when outside. The parking has suitability for 2+ cars.
There is the possibility that you can encounter the farms dogs, or dogs from other guests outside, so the suitability of Ty Mamgu for dog reactive dogs is questionable. Additionally, there is livestock on site and on my short stroll from Ty Mamgu to the organic farm shop I was greeted by a resident cat- something that Mulder would have struggled with and that other prey driven dogs could too.
The farm shop was amazing! It was stocked with organic sausages, bacon, burgers, and more, all made right on-site. Plus, they had cheeses from a local cheesemaker made just around the corner. If you forgot anything at home, this little shop had you covered. The communal barn had lots of games and activities to enjoy, although dogs are not allowed to be left in the accommodations, so human reactive dogs might struggle.

Surrounding Walks/Things to Do

Ty Mamgu is in a prime spot, just a short drive from several dog-friendly beaches, including the stunning Cardigan Bay. We made a stop at Llangrannog Beach, where dogs are welcome on one side. Pro tip: park at the top car park in the field (it’s free!), avoid the one by the beach, as it’s notorious for handing out parking tickets.
We also explored Aberporth Beach, Tresaith, and Cardigan, all of which were lovely. If you’re visiting in the summer, keep an eye out as these spots are famous for dolphin sightings.
If adventuring out doesn't sound like your cup of tea then don't worry, there are plenty of scenic walks on the 60-acre farm. Just be sure to avoid the livestock fields. One of the best spots for walking is the back valley behind the farmhouse, which is always kept livestock free.
For a lovely walk, head up towards the drive and turn left past the polytunnel and green Dutch barn. Carry on uphill and through the gate by the large beech trees. If you follow this path down it will take you down into the valley by a lovely stream. Or, if you prefer, you can take the farm track beyond the main farmyard for another quiet walk.
Final Thoughts- Is This Suitable For Sensitive/Reactive Dogs?
While Ty Mamgu is tucked away in a secluded spot, I’d be a bit cautious about recommending it for reactive or nervous dogs. During our stay, we didn’t see anyone else or any other dogs, but the location, along with the nearby campsite and cottages, could mean things might feel a bit different during peak times—especially if you’re heading to the farm shop or hanging out in the communal barn area.
There are definitely more chances to encounter other people and dogs, so if your dog is sensitive to that, it’s something to consider. Plus, the livestock on-site might trigger prey-driven dogs. For us, something unsettled Scully one night, and he ended up pacing, whining, and barking all night. It’s pretty unusual for him, but he’s noise-reactive, and I could faintly hear cows mooing in the distance.
Since the cottage is in an open field without fencing, it’s important to keep dogs on a lead whenever they’re outside, and while it might not be the best fit for dogs that are sensitive or reactive, I’d absolutely recommend Ty Mamgu for anyone with friendly, easygoing dogs. It’s a great spot to relax, explore, and enjoy the peaceful countryside!
